dispensing practical – ointment and pessaries August 23, 2007

Had a rather fun, albeit disasterous pharmacy law dispensing practical today hahaha. We made emulsifying ointment and pessaries (go check the dictionary if you don’t know what it is).

It was at the last 3 hours of a 8am-5pm day without a break. By God’s grace, my brain was still functioning and I still had plenty of energy. Well, for one, I nearly burnt my hand on hot steam while heating over a water bath and spilled wax liquid all over my partner’s bench and on the floor. It solidified and the aunty had a hard time cleaning it up using hot water to melt it off the floor. Then I had to weigh everything all over again and heat the stuff over the water bath.

The bench was a total mess. I used 4 packets of tissue paper just cleaning apparatus and wiping stuff. Didn’t help that the group B person who used my bench didn’t clean the apparatus properly so the beakers and casserole were dirty with wax and oily substances.

While weighing the glycerol, I spilled it all over my electronic balance. I dropped solids and other liquids onto it as well. Poor balance. Of course I tried cleaning it, but who knows how much damage I did to it. Oh and I weighed out glycerol 3 times because first, I cleaned my beaker of glycerol mistakenly thinking it had water in it instead. Then after weighing it out again, I realised I used the wrong beaker: supposed to use a ligher beaker. Ok, then I got it right the 3rd time :P

Well I finished early because hey, I’m efficient :P And I improvised without knowing it. Actually we were supposed to evaporate the mixture of glycerol, gelatin and water to the correct volume, but I was blur, so I just weighed another beaker and poured the mixture into it to weigh. Apparently, from what I heard from my other friends, the evaporating process took a long long time…heee..

Ah, my pessaries turned out quite beautifully and my ointment was nice and creamy. Oh the ointment is actually quite useful because after taking a whole lot of time washing my apparatus, my finger which got burnt felt like nothing bad happened to it. Cool…

After I finished, I just helped the people around me haha. Cut their paper, remove their pessaries from the mould, wash apparatus… Pharmacy practicals are actually quite fun. It’s like cooking: just follow the instructions and you get your product. However, I think the people who use our products will suffer adverse side effects, looking at the way we do things :P

Some people were quite negative, kept saying they won’t finish and stuff like that but hey, just do just do. Pastor taught us never to give up: we can be struck down but not destroyed. Pauline said many times, that God is a positive God. So yep, definitely can finish if you just keep doing, don’t stress ;) It’s just a practical. And it’s fun! :)
